Packaging Engineer Senior

Position located in Mankato, Minnesota



Leads packaging design activities in support of new product development and continuous improvement projects

for the Minn Kota, Cannon, and Humminbird brands. Ensures that products are protected during transit and

warehousing to our trade customers and end users by using cost effective, innovative cushioning solutions.

Working with Manufacturing Engineering, assists in implementing designs into production using accepted

industrial engineering and lean manufacturing methodologies. Partners with Marketing to design compelling retail

packages that will drive sales at point of purchase and grow brand equity.


Key responsibilities include:

- As part of new product development teams, designs cost effective packaging solutions that can withstand the rigors of the small parcel-shipping environment and arrive at the end user defect-free.

- Responsible for developing the test specifications (shock, vibration, compression) and working with outside labs as necessary to conduct requisite testing to confirm designs are acceptable.

- Collaborates with Marketing to provide creative structural and decorative solutions in support of brand objectives.

- Leads the expansion of an existing internal returnable packaging system downstream to component suppliers with the goals of streamlining operational efficiency and reducing overall enterprise costs.

- Supports annual cost savings initiatives by working with Purchasing and Finance to identify opportunities to reduce material and labor costs on an ongoing basis.

- Working with Compliance Engineer, supports any regulatory requirements for packaging based on international environmental standards and apply those standards to our packaging designs.

- Supports Quality Engineering with routine audits to ensure our designs are adequate and that suppliers are delivering materials to specification.

- Attends annual packaging trade expo’s as needed to stay current with industry best practices and new innovative packaging technologies.

- Must work well in a highly collaborative work environment with cross-functional teams in support of multiple domestic and international facilities and suppliers of contract-manufactured goods. Ongoing production problem solving support will be required for any packaging related issues.


The ideal candidate will have:

- Complete understanding of the shock, vibration, and stacking conditions encountered in shipping, and creative thinking to create CAD designs that can be prototyped, tested, and ultimately used by Purchasing to obtain competitive quotes.

- Experience in corrugated and foam packaging design and testing.

- Full understanding of industry standards on package testing (ASTM, ISTA).

- Experience with printed point of sale packaging and clamshells is desirable.

- Strong mindset of continuous improvement and the grit to challenge the status quo.

- Knowledge of lean manufacturing methodologies and principles.

- Complete understanding of current ASTM/ISTA industry standards as well as related governmental and international environmental regulations.

- Demonstrated understanding of transit and packaging testing equipment utilized by ASTM/ISTA certified facilities.

- Ability to create, read, and interpret drawing requirements and specifications.

 - Demonstrated ability to effectively manage multiple priorities simultaneously and meet critical deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

- Strong initiative, curiosity, and the ability to work autonomously.

- Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills to work effectively with internal teams and external suppliers across multiple geographic cultures. Ability to represent the company professionally to both customers and suppliers.

- Flexible and adaptable mindset to navigate internal processes, advocate change where needed and cope with delays or unexpected events.

- Proficiency in using CAD engineering software as well as the Microsoft Office suite including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

- Ability to work extended hours as required, including overtime and weekends.

Prominent Packaging Executive Passes Away at 83

Richard (Dick) Giesen, former owner of Chicago-based Continental Packaging Solutions and a prominent local businessman who served as president and CEO of some of Chicago’s best-known companies, died April 19 at the age of 83.

Continental was a nationwide packaging distributor that was acquired by Berlin Packaging in 2010. It was founded in 1936 as Continental Glass Company, initially supplying glass bottles to beverage companies including Pepsi Cola, 7-Up, Dr. Pepper, and Jim Beam. Giesen was part of a 1988 buyout that helped build the company into a business with branches from coast to coast as well as in mainland China, and value-added services ranging from component assembly and package decoration to warehousing and logistics management.

He previously served as president and CEO of Field Enterprises, whose properties included The Chicago Sun-Times newspaper; Science Research Associates (SRA) a leading education publisher; and American Appraisal Associates, the largest independent asset valuation company in the world.

Survivors include son Mark Giesen, chairman of the National Association of Container Distributors.
